How to Check Laptop Processor for Errors?

Having a good and functional laptop is a blessing, recently one of our office laptops had few errors and we had to fix it. While checking the laptop, I realized that the laptop processor was showing signs of failure.

We all think that it is difficult to check the laptop processor for errors and then fix it. In this article, our editors have explained in detail, How to Check Laptop Processor for Errors?

So the first question arises in our mind is that, what is a processor in the laptop? the answer is the processor is the heart of every computer and it is responsible for every application we use and also responsible for the operating system.

A processor is a small chip that resides in a laptop and other electronic devices. It receives input and provides output.

How to Check Laptop Processor for Errors?

The processor is also called CPU “Central Operating System”.The processor controls all the basic system instructions of a laptop.

The main functions of the laptop processor are:

  • Fetch
  • Decode
  • Execute
  • Writeback

Components of the computer processor:

There are main components of the processor

  • ALU(Arithmetic Logical Unit): it performs simple arithmetic and logical operations
  • CU (control unit): it reads instructions from memory and transforms them into a series of signals to activate other parts of the computer
  • Cache: it serves as high-speed memory where instructions can b copied.

Errors in the laptop processor:
As we know that the processor plays a significant role in computers. So when a processor suffers from any of damage or gets failed to operate then it slows down the system anyway.

Signs of laptop processor errors

there are different signs and symptoms of processor failure:

Bootups issue

When you boot up your laptop or mobile and nothing happens it indicates a POST test is running. POST test is a self-check of a computer that its processor working or not. If it is found out that the processor is not working, the boot-up process will then be interrupted and the motherboard will produce a beeping sound.

Beeping sound has codes that indicate the amount of damage, there are LEDs that will light up when the power is turned on. If these LEDs are lighting up but the machine is refusing to POST, the likely cause is a processor failure.

System Immediately Shuts Down

On the processor, heat sensors have connected that sense the heat immediately so when the processor gets heat up or the temperature of processor increases due to overload. Then these sensors work immediately and shut down the system to prevent further loss of processor.

It is the simplest diagnostic way to check the processor failure.because prolonged overheating can damage 100 % Processor.

System freeze

Arrow of the mouse freezes or fixes on the screen and the screen shows no response to the keyboard it is also the symptoms of the processor failure. It is caused by the heating up of the processor or it could be of graphics card processor failing.

System stop

It is called system halt errors are commonly known as blue screen, it is common symptoms of processor failure in Windows 98 and 95 and window XP, and especially in window vista and window 7.

Reasons for Laptop processor errors

There are many common reasons that we ignore using laptops or computers, effects the processor.

  • Heat

Laptop or computer generates a lot of heat during the operating system and the graphics system also produces heat. The processor, hard drive, and other mechanisms of computer heat up the processor, the processor contains a fan that contributes to the balance of heat up.

Never underestimate the power of fan of the processor and place your laptops in an air-conditioned room if it is possible. If your laptop is only printing in black and white, immediately restart the system.

  • Aging of a laptop

Everything has its own time and then it becomes useless the same as it is processor also have their time limits. So the outlive processor cannot run anymore. So it becomes useless after its age, for example, if you have an old computer, its processor can die immediately if it is taken care properly.

Specifically, the processor made up of many transistors so one or two of them when getting damage it fails the whole processor so it’s a natural process.

  • Humidity:

Humidity can cause the problem in the processor as we know that liquid and electricity cannot be mixed, the same as humidity cause problems in the processor. So the dry climate and over humidity both can affect the performance of the processor.

During the rain or accidentally when water enters into the circuit or motherboard of the processor short circuit causes and damages the processor. So make your laptop processor temperature under 40 to 50 ^C. low humidity can also effect the processor below 35 can worsen the processor to make it under 40 to 50.

  • Unstable voltage:

if you are living in that area where there is no proper electricity or improper way of lighting then it can kill your computer processor. unstable voltage can worsen the processor. So make sure not to connect your computer with the wall outlet if it is possible then use the surge protection to save your computer for sudden spikes.

  • Bad motherboard:

The motherboard connects all the different components of the computer so bad motherboard makes other components not to work and other components fail to work. If you watch any leaking and bulging of the capacitor then there would be a probability of processor failure.

How to fix laptop processor errors?

  • Hardware check
  • Damaged components

There are many components of the computer that are seated beside one another and loses their grip. Ground yourself to avoid electrifying the system and resultantly more damage.

Then you can check that the CPU aka processor is accurately fitted on the motherboard.muddled up components of a computer or unfitted and unclean components can damage the computer.

  • Overheating components:

Overheating of the components is a more common symptom of the processor so to overcome this problem you need a powerful cooling system or a heat sink.

Also, use temperature monitoring tools and fan control tools to make the system cool an to get better performance of the processor. You should be familiar with all the possible causes of laptops getting hot.

  • Update software drivers:

set automatic updates in Windows 10 by following the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Go to Start menu then go to Settings in the settings window go to Update & Security and Windows Update.

Step 2: Under the Check for updates option you’ll find Advanced options click on that.

Step 3: In the Advanced options window choose Automatic (recommended) from the drop-down list under the title Choose how updates are installed.

  • POST test

The Power on self-test is a very interesting series of diagnostic tests run by the BIOS(Basic Input Output System). These determine all the essential hardware components of the computer are performing perfectly without any problems.

This testing will show a text if any hardware malfunction is detected while booting. That can serve for you to determine the exact problem with your system.

  • CPU noise:

If your computer is making a noise of fan then it means that due to overload processor is getting hot and the temperature of the outside is also hot. So for this problem keep our eye on the CPU and place the computer in an open area or ventilated area to make the temperature normal inside.

  • Anti-Virus:

If you notice the virus in your laptop then install antivirus software to keep your computer protected from the virus. Allow the antivirus to run automatically in the background and regularly.

  • Top quality coolants

Use top quality coolants or fans as a third party, they are proficient and efficient but they make noise and are loudly, so many people don’t like these type of coolants.

  • Proper cleaning

clean the internals on regular intervals properly to ward off the perpetual damage caused by the dust inside the case. Dust can cause the air vents to clog and resultantly reducing the airflow for cooling the processor.

Proper cleaning will also make your laptop faster. The laptop keyboard should be cleaned regularly along with internal cleaning. I have just posted a detailed guide on this, you can read it here.

  • Laptop location

The environment of your computer is of very importance to the computer’s performance and long life. If it is placed in a damp or hot environment it can cause problems for you in the long run.

A dry, cool and airy space is the best location for a system. Though if it was up to computers they would like a cold place so a climate controlled or air-conditioned room would be a better option for them.

Importance of a laptop processor:

  • The performance of a computer is dependent on how well its processor works.
  • The processor performs the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of a computer system.
  • A faster processor means applications load quickly, you can run multiple applications at once.
  • The computer won’t lag or held and cause slowdowns when you run processor-intensive tasks.

A processor can have a single core and multiple cores.

  • 2 cores: dual-core
  • 4 cores:quad-core

Types of the processor:

There are two manufacturers of laptop processors, I have just posted a detailed guide on Intel Processors Generations.

  • Intel
  • Celeron
  • Pentium

Features of a laptop processor

  • Every processor contains clock speed, measured in gigahertz.
  • A processor contains front side bus, it connects with the system’s random access memory (RAM.)
  • CPUs also have a cache. A cache is a fast memory that helps as a buffer between RAM and the processor.

Consideration:

  • To install a new processor, install a heat sink and fan too. because faster processors produce more heat than slower ones.
  • If you fail to protect your new CPU from this heat, you may end up replacing the processor.

Size of a laptop processor

  • Size matters in choosing a processor.
  • One should also check the speed of the front side bus (FSB) when purchasing a CPU. A front side bus of 800 MHz for fast processing speeds.
  • A cache is also important. Make sure it has at least 1 MB of last level cache if your computing needs are average. There would be a great difference between the cheapest processors and expensive ones, but, investing a little amount can give you the best processor.
