How to Check Laptop Fan Performance?

In this article, Issac who is a member of our editorial team explain ways that you can use to access your laptop fan and fix it. Problems with laptop fan is a common problem with gamers where you use your laptop for continuous hours. While performing multiple tasks or operating heavy apps, your laptop will need a better functioning fan to prevent overheating.

Hi, my name is Isaac Abraham and I’m the owner of a small business. Like any other entrepreneur, my dependency on a laptop for working and recording essential data of my business is pretty obvious, as conventional desktop PC doesn’t provide you the mobility and convenience like these modern-day laptops.

We can move our data and business alongside wherever we go and can work on it at any desired time and atmosphere. But along with convenience, we also face problems regarding the handling, functionality, and performance of laptops like heating issues, bad sectors in a hard disk, power cable errors, software incompatibility, etc.

Anyone who is using laptops knows the importance of the laptop fan. In this guide, I have answered today’s question, How to Check Laptop Fan Performance?

And as our businesses are directly connected to our laptops, we need to fix such issues as soon as possible but it creates a lot of hustle to take it to a professional and let it solved as soon as possible, and it definitely proves to be a costly option usually. Not only it takes out your money but you also have to sacrifice your time that is more costly than money itself.

So I decided to be a professional by myself and started to study and research on my own and also tried to elaborate my knowledge to other people so we can save cost, time and hustle caused due to such issues, we usually face.

How to Check Laptop Fan Performance?

Today I want to address on a very common yet technical issue, we usually face with our laptops and that is a heating issue. Now to understand this thing we first need to have a look at the concept.

Cooling is required to eliminate the heat produced by computer components like processor, graphics cards, etc. You can always add laptop Colling pad that will keep maintain your laptop temperature, click here to buy from Amazon.

A fan is required to maintain a certain temperature to avoid any overheating which may cause hardware failure, frequent shutdowns, application crashing, data loss and in worst case scenario a burnt chipset or motherboard which means your laptop is completely doomed, unfortunately. I can guarantee that no one ever wants this to happen ever.

So, we will try to examine and understand this whole concept in this discussion and will see the possibilities, general troubleshooting and some advanced techniques to make sure the health and the durability of our laptop remain intact. This will definitely ensure the safety of our personal and business data and as well as of cash you invested in this laptop as an asset.

There are various techniques that have been used to eliminate heat factor like fan cooling, a piezoelectric pump, Passive way cooling & liquid immersion, etc. but most commonly we use fan cooling system. They extract heat from components of laptop and blow it out, just like a usual exhaust mechanism.

It is one of the most effective systems for this cause, but sometimes we face problems in this too. Many times we don’t find our laptop temperature a bit abnormal and heat is not properly exhausted out. We also face a slow speed in the rotation of fan or sometimes noise is so loud that it indicates a problem itself as an alarm.

So, following are some techniques and points to keep your laptop cool as much possible:

Troubleshooting by Hardware:

Let’s first examine the problem by checking and observing the hardware of the laptop regarding this. First of all, listen to the noise, hear its rhythm. Fans produce a very moderate rhythmic sound so put your ears on it, feel the noise. Remember that just turning your laptop ON will not put the fan into charge unless you put it into a stressful situation.

More elaborately when we start performing high consumption tasks like image editing, playing a video game, watching a high-resolution movie, etc. such tasks put the laptop in pressure to perform as per required and in such situations, a lot of heat is generated, and that’s where the fans help out to exhaust the heat out.

So, simply just play a 4k video on YouTube or start a game and then listen to the sound of the fan. It will help a lot to find the core of the problem. Any sort of distortion in rhythmic moderate sound means there must be a problem with the hardware of the fan system.

Check laptop for dust

As we discussed above that fan system is used to exhaust the head out, so we should check the vents and particular surrounding area. If there is dust surrounded then definitely this is blocking your fan to perform right and not letting it push heat out of the laptop.

So the dust can be a vital cause, so unscrew the related panel and clear it out by using a blower or a can of compressed air and making it clean properly so there must be no blockage around. If you are using a laptop on your bed, you should use a small desk for this.

You can also use a Laptop Cooling pad to ensure the passage of air remains intact. Also, clear the surrounding area of the fan system too. If it is too gummed and dirty enough to be cleared or to make it function properly, search for its model number or version and buy its substitute from a computer store or even from online stores. It is very easy to find substitutes.

Remember removing dust from fan system is sometimes not the only possible solution. Sometimes a dusted hard drive can also put a lot of pressure on the system so if you going to clear the dust, do it on the complete system, not only at fans or vents.

Meanwhile, why and how you allow such amount of dust to gather on your laptop?? Address this issue too kindly, try to keep your laptop on a safe and clear area and be habitual in cleaning it every day to avoid dust from gathering around.

Broken laptop fan

Another major issue can be a damaged or broken fan. A hardware failure in the fan can cause an immense heating issue in laptop and also the broken fan can damage surrounding components of the laptop. So, if it is the problem, solve it as soon as possible. Buy and install a better quality component to ensure the system work perfectly without any interruption.

Check laptop battery

Another issue which is usually neglected by people is the matter of dying batteries. A dying battery generates a lot of heat and can also cause malfunction so replacing them is also important to keep this issue minimized.

There is also an advanced technique named “Thermal Paste”, a substance that can be applied to CPU and it keeps the whole system cool. It is highly advised to the users who create a lot of rendering stuff like images, movies, maps, etc. AS5 is a thermal paste highly recommended by my own experience for this purpose.

Troubleshooting by Software:

Now we will take a look at the possibility of managing this problem by making some settings in the control panel or by using some sort of application to monitor and solve the problem.

Defragmentation can also help to serve the cause. We should also clear the unnecessary data from drives. Junk files are always a liability. If you don’t know about defragmenting then it is like clearing the remains of data that is unusable and it’s hidden mostly.

Many times when we delete a file, it remains and keeps an image on the drive so, once in a month defragment can help us to solve out such matters. Newer Versions of windows have built-in support and also clearance or defragment options but still, it is important to keep a check by your own to make sure that you don’t get piles of such anonymous data gathered.

A question arises here is that how we can check stats and figures related to heat generated by CPU other than just feeling it?

To know how exactly the temperature of your system is, you can try various apps like RealTemp, Core Temp, HWiNFO, Speed Fan, etc. to keep enlightened with stats. Mac Users can access information by iStat Menu and Windows user can also check starts by opening Task Manager( Ctrl+ALT+Del), under the performance tab.

We can increase the speed of the fan by changing its setting to run it at maximum or required speed to get the desired results.

In Windows we can try the following settings as so:

  • Control Panel
    • Hardware and Sound
    • Power Options
    • Change Plan Settings
    • Change Advanced Power Settings
    • Power Options
    • Advanced Settings
    • Processor Power Management
    • System Cooling Policy
    • Select Active to increase the speed of your CPU Fan and Click Apply and then OK.

Hence I tried to enlighten and explain to you the maximum of my basic knowledge about this cause. Keep it in mind that no one should ever use a laptop in your lap or doesn’t place it on such a place which obstructs the flow of Air in or out, beneath the surface of the laptop.

In case, if your problem prevails, then definitely it is a more serious issue than we expect. Keep the usage minimum and consult the professional as you might need to buy a whole new cooling system. But by following the above techniques and methods, you can not only avoid such situations but also can troubleshoot such problems effectively by yourself.

Thank You
